About this Project

We hold police accountable for misconduct and work to ensure police discretion and powers are used fairly in relation to marginalised groups, such as young people, people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people experiencing homelessness.

Our current areas of focus include:

  • the use of the Suspect Targeting Management Plan on young people;
  • bail compliance checks; and
  • the over use of arrest for breach of bail.

Supported by an innovative pro bono partnership with Allens, PIAC represents clients in litigation in our current focus areas, and in strategic litigation regarding inappropriate, unlawful or unjust treatment by police.  We also work collaboratively with other organisations to undertake systemic and strategic advocacy and policy work.
