PIAC has welcomed the release of the Cameron Review of Community Legal Centre Services and the response by the NSW Government, announced today by NSW Attorney General, Mark Speakman.
PIAC CEO Jonathon Hunyor said ‘The Review is a very strong endorsement of the work that community legal centres do and the Government’s commitment of an additional $2.2m for the sector from next financial year is very welcome news’.
‘The Review specifically recognises the value of advocacy, law reform and policy development undertaken by specialist CLCs such as PIAC and the vital role we play in identifying and remedying systemic issues. We welcome the Government’s support for the Review’s recommendation that “The NSW Government should continue to provide funding to CLCs that engage in strategic advocacy that seeks to identify and remedy systemic issues”.
‘We are very grateful to Attorney General, Mark Speakman, for his leadership in supporting the community legal sector, which last year faced a significant funding crisis and now will have more of the funding it needs to do its vital work.’
