Abstract
Despite a number of inquiries into the criminal justice system and reviews of bail laws in NSW over the last few years, NSW continues to have the highest remand population of any state in Australia. In this submission to the NSW Law Reform Commission’s review of the Bail Act 1978 (NSW), PIAC examines the role and impact of bail laws on this unsettling trend and recommends changes to bail laws in order to reduce the remand population and provide greater community-based support to those vulnerable and disadvantaged
