Abstract
This Joint Submission examines the impact of existing Australian migration
laws and policies on people with disabilities. PIAC and STARTTS argue
that these laws and policies discriminate against people with disability.
Disability is treated as a cost to society with no consideration being
given to the positive contribution that a person with a disability may
make to the economic and social wellbeing of the Australian community.
Refugees and prospective humanitarian entrants with disability are
particularly disadvantaged by this system. The Joint Submission calls for
a reformulation of prescribed health requirements so that they are
consistent with Australia’s social inclusion policies and its obligations
under international human rights law.
