In 2008, PIAC attended a special forum of Australian non-profit organisations, which looked at the role and importance of the sector and the need to convene a new representative group. PIAC was later involved in discussions on the development of a National Compact between the third sector and government.

In May 2011 the federal government announced plans to establish a new independent statutory agency—the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC)—by 1 July 2012
