State and national consumer protections
PIAC uses the media and government consultations to highlight the need for enhanced consumer protections in a future of higher energy prices and privatisation of the energy supply industry. This includes working with the NSW Government on the development of the Consumer Assistance Policy to improve customer information provisions and to assist customers experiencing payment difficulty.
Many energy consumer protections are being centralised under the auspices of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG), through the National Energy Customer Framework.
PIAC has worked closely with colleagues around Australia to ensure that the voices of consumers are heard in this process.
EWCAP continues to work with NSW stakeholders as the implementation of the NECF in NSW approaches.
