Policing and Indigenous communities
PIAC works with Indigenous communities to identify and address systemic issues arising from police procedures and practices that negatively impact on Indigenous people in NSW.
PIAC advises and assists Aboriginal people who have been adversely affected by unfair and unlawful police conduct. Our work currently focuses on the interactions between young people and the police. PIAC is running a class action on behalf of young people who have been unlawfully arrested by police on out-of-date bail information. Click here for more information.
PIAC works with other organisations to provide free legal advice and representation to young people who have complaints about or have been harmed by police misconduct.
We are also campaigning for the introduction of a fully independent and effective police complaints system in NSW to progress accountability in the NSW Police service.
