In 2008, the then NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change issued a Draft Regulation on Tanning Units. PIAC made a submission on the draft regulation, supporting most provisions, which significantly strengthened the regulation of the operation of tanning units in NSW. PIAC also worked collaboratively with the NSW Cancer Council on suggested amendments to the draft regulation.

The NSW Government subsequently amended the regulations under the Radiation Control Act 1990 (NSW) to incorporate the regulation of tanning units and solaria, adopting most of the Draft Regulations and incorporating several of the changes suggested by PIAC and the NSW Cancer Council.
