Health information privacy
PIAC’s focus on privacy issues that have an impact on the rights of healthcare consumers and the quality and safety of the care they receive led to the following actions:
In 2009, PIAC made a submission to the Senate Community Affairs Committee on proposed changes to Medicare Compliance Audits. PIAC, through the submission, sought to balance the right of patients to the confidentiality of their health records with the public interest in an efficient, fair and appropriately funded universal health system.
In 2009 and 2010, PIAC made submissions to government and parliamentary processes in relation to e-Health records.
The Healthcare Identifiers Service commenced on 1 July 2010.
