On 1 March 2011, the NSW Government finalised the privatisation of the retail and generation arms of the State-owned electricity market. 
EWCAP has made ongoing contributions to the NSW Government’s plans for privatisation in the electricity sector. EWCAP’s work focused on minimising the negative impacts to consumers and achieving an effective consumer protection safety net. This work included:

• commissioning research into alternatives to privatisation in response to the Owen Report on the future of the electricity industry
• contributing to the Unsworth Committee’s deliberations on the impacts of the proposed privatisation of the NSW electricity industry
• providing information and submissions to parliamentarians and Ministers
• providing information to consumers about the changes to the NSW retailers after the sell-off, and the impacts the transition may have on household electricity accounts.
