Disclosure and the community sector

In September 2008, PIAC made a submission to the Senate Inquiry into the disclosure regimes for charities and not-for-profit organisations, supporting the need for all not-for-profit organisations to be accountable to the government and the community. PIAC argued that:

  • the not-for-profit sector is already subject to a lot of regulation; what is needed is better, more targeted regulation
  • charities and not-for-profit organisations have been the subject of many inquiries and reports, but few recommendations have been implemented. The Senate Inquiry should build on the findings of these inquiries rather than conduct more research.

The Senate Committee’s report supported many of our recommendations. These recommendations were noted by government and have informed ongoing research during 2009. The 2011/12 budget included some of these - see a summary here.
