Constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
In 2010, the Federal Government appointed an expert panel of lawyer, academics, politicians and community leaders to conduct consultations around Australia on proposed changes to the federal Constitution to provide greater protection and recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Individuals and organisations were also encouraged to put in written submissions on this issue, and the Panel is due to report to the government at the end of 2011, with a referendum on the issue due to occur before or at the next federal election.
