Who we can help

PIAC has limited resources and gets many requests for help. PIAC has a clear set of guidelines that describe the matters PIAC may be able to assist with.

In accordance with the PIAC Strategic Plan, assistance may be available with cases about:

  • Protecting Human Rights in Australia
  • Equality
  • Privacy
  • Freedom of Information
  • Electoral Processes
  • Policing and detention
  • Indigenous Justice
  • Health

In addition, cases that are taken up by PIAC must:

  • have reasonable prospects of success
  • have potential to have a significant impact through reform in the short to medium-term

PIAC will consider whether there is a more appropriate legal service to take on the matter, such as Legal Aid NSW or generalist community legal centre, or if there is a community legal centre that specialises in the area.

Ultimately, PIAC has limited resources and gets many requests for help.

Sometimes very worthwhile cases might come to PIAC but we can’t take them on because they fall outside of the agreed priority areas identified in the Strategic Plan or because PIAC does not have the capacity or resources to assist at the time.

PIAC does not accept legal enquiries by e-mail, correspondence or facsimile other than in exceptional circumstances. Contact PIAC by telephone if you have a legal enquiry.
