Tenancy Law for Non-Lawyers

A one-day introduction to tenancy laws for community workers who assist or advocate for clients about housing issues.

The Residential Tenancies Act 2010 commences on 31 January 2011 and includes more than 100 reforms.

The course covers:

  • The start of a tenancy, during a tenancy and when a tenancy comes to an end 
  • Overview of the new laws and how they can assist renters
  • A brief introduction to the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal
  • Similarities and differences for people renting in social housing, caravan parks and share housing

Improvements for tenants in the new law:

  • effective regulation of tenant databases 
  • ‘fee-free’ methods for paying rent 
  • options for survivors of domestic violence to change their tenancy arrangements 
  • longer notice periods for ‘no-grounds’ termination notices.
