Improving community awareness of human rights and how they can be protected is critical to ensuring a fair, just and democratic society.
In its work on human rights, PIAC aims to promote:
- awareness and use of human rights mechanisms
- the protection of internationally recognised human rights
- the equal enjoyment of rights
- improved privacy protection.

- Working with community groups and individuals on submissions to the National Human Rights Consultation
- Vindicating Romzi Ali’s defamation claim against Nationwide News
- Representing clients discriminated against by Wesley Mission on the grounds of their sexuality
- Contributing to NGO reports to the United Nations
- Advocating for accessible airline travel
- Winning a homosexual vilification case against 2UE
- Extensive references to PIAC’s recommendations in ALRC report on Australian Privacy Law
- Leading NGO commentary on anti-terrorism laws that infringe civil and political rights
- Opposing the extension of anti-terrorism laws into general policing.
