Overview

Access to adequate health care is a human right. PIAC is working to ensure equal access to quality health care for all members of the community.

PIAC aims to assist in:

  • making the health care system more accessible and transparent for consumers
  • promoting policies and practices that maximise safety and quality of health care
  • securing the delivery of appropriate quality of health care services for people in institutional settings
  • ensuring appropriate, respectful care and treatment of people with mental illness
  • improving the interaction of the legal and health systems to ensure human and health rights are upheld
  • meeting unmet needs for people with a mental illness in accessing free and affordable legal services.

PIAC’s record

  • Establishing the Mental Health Legal Services Project
  • Contributing to the development of a National Registration of Health Professionals
  • Lobbying for a national Charter of Healthcare Rights
  • Working for the rights of consumers in the health complaints process and lobbying for independent complaints processes in healthcare
  • Convening the Mental Health in Prisons Network
