Overview
Access to adequate health care is a human right. PIAC is working to ensure equal access to quality health care for all members of the community.
PIAC aims to assist in:
- making the health care system more accessible and transparent for consumers
- promoting policies and practices that maximise safety and quality of health care
- securing the delivery of appropriate quality of health care services for people in institutional settings
- ensuring appropriate, respectful care and treatment of people with mental illness
- improving the interaction of the legal and health systems to ensure human and health rights are upheld
- meeting unmet needs for people with a mental illness in accessing free and affordable legal services.
PIAC’s record
- Establishing the Mental Health Legal Services Project
- Contributing to the development of a National Registration of Health Professionals
- Lobbying for a national Charter of Healthcare Rights
- Working for the rights of consumers in the health complaints process and lobbying for independent complaints processes in healthcare
- Convening the Mental Health in Prisons Network
